The previous holder, Avatar, has been there since 2010 and prior to that it was another James Cameron film Titanic which held the title from 1999.
The Force Awakens is still the number 1 film at the weekly box office and is showing no signs of slowing down, it has taken just 3 and a half weeks for the film to take the top grossing crown.
Also by this weekend the film should be come the top grossing film in the UK, and much of the world will likely follow in the coming weeks and months.
The next big mile stone will be the top film of all time globally, its getting there and at the current rate it will do it, the film is not out in China yet, a massive movie going market, this weekend when it is released should give an indication to if and when the film will conquer the world.
